London Day 1: The one where we struggled to get here
Well today was definitely a wild day as getting to London was not the easiest process. Everything started off smoothly; we managed to fight our way through the metro with our bags and got through the first checkpoint at the Eurostar. However, things quickly went downhill when we got into the second line where Border Patrol was checking passports. The security was letting everyone else go in front of us because they were "individuals" and we were a group. We tried to explain the situation to him several times but he wouldn't let us through until he end. So we wound up missing our train and had to wait another hour to catch the next one. To say this experience was frustrating and stressful is an understatement. At he end of the day though, we still made it to London with only a slight delay.
Shortly after our arrival we visited The Design Museum. So far this is my favorite museum. I liked that this museum was really interactive and it helped me learn and understand more about the various types of design. For example, there was a section on the Tubes design and typography, a section on fashion design, and electronic design. The interactive portions included deciding which cup would be the best for a specific person to drink from and designing a magazine cover. I enjoyed these because there are so different from each other, but they have the same general idea, which is to make a product for a specific user. This is the all part of the "designer, maker, user" cycle. As one of the displays said, design is by the people, for the people and each one influences the other. I also learned about suprematism, which the use of geometric shapes, and constructionism, which uses photo collages. These styles were shown in the Moscow exhibit. I found that exhibit interesting because the building designs were so original, but they were never built. The last display I saw though stood out to me because it was a whole wall of different forms of design ranging from clothes to the World Cup soccer ball to the Tube stop signs and even to a mop. I think this wall really captured the diversity in design and how even the simplest objects are only here because someone designed them. It just goes to show without design we wouldn't really have anything.
After the museum, some of us had dinner at the Sticky Fingers, which is a Rolling Stones themed diner. We then just had a nice, relaxing night in as preparation for another big day ahead of us!
