London Day 3: The one where I found my future job

Today we visited the Tate museum, which is a modern art museum.  The first section we went into was about the use of different everyday materials to make art.  We didn't really understand it originally, but then we thought about how it's more about the intent/idea and the materials used than the actual end product.  Then we moved onto another section where there cokes bottles with different messages on them.  I thought his piece was really interesting because the man who wrote theses slogans and instructions used them as a way to spread political messages under the Brazilian dictatorship; he compared his project to messages in a bottle and it just goes to show how many different ways there are to use art to reach an audience and spread ideas.  I also like the Donald Judd sculpture of shelves.  This piece was very minimalist and what I like the most about it was that there was nothing else to it like a specific meaning; it was meant to just be a simple sculpture.

However, as we left the museum the most exciting but random thing happened.  We were walking along the river when I noticed people putting a net in the water and performing what looked like a beach seine, which is a way to collect fish samples.  We stopped to watch and it looked like they caught something.  I decided to go down to the beach and ask what they were doing.  It turned out it was a group of marine biologists conducting research on juvenile fish in the estuary because there is pretty much no information on what type of fish are there and when they're there.  The woman I was talking to gave me an info packet and I even got to see the little fish they caught.  I can't believe I met other marine scientists here, especially because I was thinking about one day trying to get a job or do research in the Great Britain area.

I'm now off to get ready for our nice group dinner tonight where I'm sure we'll all be buzzing with excitement over the Harry Potter tour tomorrow
