Paris Day 4: The one where we actually made it to the catacombs
Today was yet another packed day. We started off by going to the top if the Eiffel Tower. It was so different seeing it up close because I could see every detail and structure. It was a really short line so we didn't have to wait long to get to the top. Once we got up there, it was so mesmerizing. I could literally see everything and it was so beautiful to see the city from a different perspective. As we were up there we even tried and succeeded in finding the landmarks we previously visited; it may have taken us 3 trips around, but we found them!
Our next stop was Musée d'Orsay. I was excited to visit this museum because like I said before I like modern art and I wanted to see some of the famous works by Van Gogh, Monet, and Renoir. I also wanted to see more Impressionism art. Usually I am into detail orientated art, but mostly because I have not seen many impressionist/post-impressionist pieces. However, I really loved everything in Impressionism. I actually liked that there was a little less detail and the use of more color. The paintings of the dancers by Degas were my favorites because I love dance, but it also showed what Impressionism is about, which I capturing movement in time. Also, there were a few paintings at the Pompidou that I loved too, but I didn't know what the movement was. There were paintings of the same style at Musée d'Orsay. I learned that they are a part of the post-impressionist/pointillism movement. What stood out the most to me was the vibrant colors and how the color scheme isn't always realistic. I learned from Jaime that instead of using strokes, the painters used dots and they used complementary colors to form the painting.
A few of us then went to the catacombs. I felt a mixture nerves and excitement. When we got to the part with the skulls and bones I was a little creeped out, but it was also one of the coolest things to see and learn about. Some of the skulls were even placed in unique design like a heart.
However, I think I was most enthusiastic for seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle in the night sky. We counted down the seconds and as soon as the twinkling lights came out it took my breathe away. I know I've said this a lot, but this was also one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I wish the lights would've stayed on all night because 5 minutes was truly not enough. I couldn't look away, the sparkling lights were so captivating. That for sure is a sight I will never forget.
