Final blog (finished)

It is hard to sum up two weeks in Europe, but I can definitely say that it was some of the best two weeks of my life so far.  Of course I had so much fun exploring each new city and seeing the touristy sights, but I also got to learn so much in the process.  I learned about all forms of design, art history, new cultures, and even a little bit of each country's language.  Before, I didn't really think too much about everything we use or see in daily life having to be designed by someone, or about where these things originated from.  This is why I liked the London Design Museum and the Museum für Gestaltung so much.  These museums showed me how we basically wouldn't have anything without designers because design includes furniture, instruments, technology, clothes, transportation, ads, street signs, etc.  Also before, I kind of knew what graphic design was, but I was able to learn way more during the trip.  I learned t...

London Day 4: The one where we all became wizards

Image
Today was our last full day in Europe; it was bittersweet, but couldn't have ended on a higher note. In the afternoon, Haley, Kellie, and I visited Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace.   It was nice to walk around a different part of London and see the touristy sights.  We couldn't see the inside of Westminster Abbey because we would've had to pay but it was still a beautiful church.  Buckingham palace was not what I expected, but the gates were really pretty with ornate lions, crowns, and cold everywhere.  However the best part was probably the park we walked into afterward because we finally got to see horses after searching for days, and the police officer even let us pet her horse. We were then off to the Harry Potter studio for a tour of the movie set.  I was so excited for this tour because I have seen all the Harry Potter movies and I have never been on a movie set before.  It was better than I even imagined, but also very different...

London Day 3: The one where I found my future job

Image
Today we visited the Tate museum, which is a modern art museum.  The first section we went into was about the use of different everyday materials to make art.  We didn't really understand it originally, but then we thought about how it's more about the intent/idea and the materials used than the actual end product.  Then we moved onto another section where there cokes bottles with different messages on them.  I thought his piece was really interesting because the man who wrote theses slogans and instructions used them as a way to spread political messages under the Brazilian dictatorship; he compared his project to messages in a bottle and it just goes to show how many different ways there are to use art to reach an audience and spread ideas.  I also like the Donald Judd sculpture of shelves.  This piece was very minimalist and what I like the most about it was that there was nothing else to it like a specific meaning; it was meant to just be a simple sculp...

London Day 2: The one where we designed packaging

Image
Today we had some free time in the early afternoon, which was nice because we got to explore Portobello Road.  Portobello road is a chain of stores, restaurants, and pop-up shops.  It was a sunny, warm day so it was nice to just walk around and do some shopping. We then went to the Museum of brands, packaging, and ads.  I think I have to update my claim from my last blog about the Design Museum being my favorite.  This museum today was so unique and even more interactive than the last.  My favorite part was the very beginning where we analyzed the products provided and then we looked at the evolution of a brand's packaging and then created our own packaging.  This part helped me to understand packaging and the process more since we were actually doing it.  Plus, it was just a lot of fun to look at the details of how the packaging changed overtime and then come up with our own ideas to make the next edition.  Once I stopped to seriously look at t...

London Day 1: The one where we struggled to get here

Image
Well today was definitely a wild day as getting to London was not the easiest process.  Everything started off smoothly; we managed to fight our way through the metro with our bags and got through the first checkpoint at the Eurostar.  However, things quickly went downhill when we got into the second line where Border Patrol was checking passports.  The security was letting everyone else go in front of us because they were "individuals" and we were a group.  We tried to explain the situation to him several times but he wouldn't let us through until he end.  So we wound up missing our train and had to wait another hour to catch the next one.  To say this experience was frustrating and stressful is an understatement.  At he end of the day though, we still made it to London with only a slight delay. Shortly after our arrival we visited The Design Museum.  So far this is my favorite museum.  I liked that this museum was really interactive and i...

Paris Day 4: The one where we actually made it to the catacombs

Today was yet another packed day.  We started off by going to the top if the Eiffel Tower.  It was so different seeing it up close because I could see every detail and structure.  It was a really short line so we didn't have to wait long to get to the top.  Once we got up there, it was so mesmerizing.  I could literally see everything and it was so beautiful to see the city from a different perspective.  As we were up there we even tried and succeeded in finding the landmarks we previously visited; it may have taken us 3 trips around, but we found them! Our next stop was Musée d'Orsay.  I was excited to visit this museum because like I said before I like modern art and I wanted to see some of the famous works by Van Gogh, Monet, and Renoir.  I also wanted to see more Impressionism art.  Usually I am into detail orientated art, but mostly because I have not seen many impressionist/post-impressionist pieces.  However, I really loved ever...
